Ottawa tops TMU in season opener

TORONTO - The Bold were struck five times by the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday afternoon, dropping their first game of the season by a 5-1 score.

Midfielder Ivymae Perez would record the team's first goal under the 'Bold' name in the 85th minute to put an end to the group's scoreless bid.

Interim head coach John Yacou referred to Perez's play as "quality", commending just how much of a difference the third-year makes when she's on the pitch.

The blue and gold got behind the eight ball both early and often throughout their season opener at Downsview Park, surrendering four goals to the visiting Gee-Gees before the half time whistle rang.

Ottawa opened up the scoring early, with forward Angelina Gendreau placing a perfect aerial pass to the feet of her teammate Kayla Kyle. The veteran defender would opt to run the ball into the net to record her side's first tally of the match.

The Gee-Gees would continue to stay on course with their goal parade later in the half, earning offensive support from a pair of attacking forwards. Soumaya Bouak would double the Gee-Gees lead with a left-footed finish in tight to the Bold goal.

Second-year forward Cassandra Provost would put the game out of reach later in the first half with goals in the 26th and 44th minutes. Weaving her way into the box, Provost matched her silky efforts with a pair of strong finishes to send her side to the locker room up on the Bold by a 4-0 score.

"On every mistake they punished us," said Yacou following the lopsided affair. The head coach pinned the team's slow start as the difference maker; an element that "put the game out of reach".

Despite the half heavily favouring the visitors, the Bold would relish a handful of opportunities to try and cut into the Gee-Gees lead. The group's offence, however, would find new life in the second half of the match, holding the vast majority of shots and offensive looks.

The group would finally break through the Gee-Gees defence late in the half, with Perez's marker bringing some life back into the supporters at Downsview. Ottawa would respond with a goal of their own in extra time to seal their second straight win, and the Bold's first loss.

"The scoreline really doesn't show the fight these girls gave," said Yacou following the loss.

The Bold now have a bye-week and are back in action on September 15 when they visit the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
