Tohana, Gonzalez lead Bold to sweep of Lions

TORONTO - The TMU Bold baseball team entered their third week of the season in much greater spirits than where they sat less than seven days prior to Saturday's first pitch. Fresh off a win against McMaster, which snapped a five-game losing skid, the Toronto Met side looked to feast on the last place York Lions and pick up some traction as they embark on a crucial second half to the OUA season.

GAME 1 & 2 vs York

The Bold's first encounter with the Lions went exactly the way the blue and gold wanted, putting up a three spot in the bottom of the second inning.

One of TMU's brightest stars in the outfield, Domenic Gonzalez followed up the Bold's trio of runs with just as many bases in the bottom of the third. His team-leading third triple of the season would make its way onto the scoreboard as well, with reigning athlete of the week, Thomas Markus, bringing him home to go up 4-0.

Both Gonzales and Markus would play a leading role in putting the game out of reach throughout the following inning. A double from Gonzales and a pair of RBI's for Markus highlighted the Bold's offensive explosion in the fourth, paving the way to a 9-1 win over the last place Lions.

Gonzales would cap off his stellar performance with a home run to put the finishing touches on the final score.

Despite touching the plate five times before the second inning wrapped up, the Bold's second matchup with the Lions picked up intensity in the late stages of the game.

Heading into the penultimate inning up 6-0, the Bold's main focus quickly switched from creating havoc on the base paths to creating history on the mound.

Starting pitcher Matt Tohana entered the seventh inning with a picture perfect score line, half a dozen scoreless innings to his name, and more importantly just as many hitless frames. By the time the dust settled, the Bold's shutout win became a historic one as Tohana's ten-strikeout performance paved the way to the team's first perfect game in program history.

The Bold's second set of games on Sunday were postponed due to heavy rain.

With the two wins on Saturday, TMU improved their record to 4-5 as they get set to take on Toronto on Saturday. First pitch is set for 8 a.m. at Bishop's Cross Park in Markham.
