Baseball falls to Toronto, picks up second win against McMaster

TORONTO - The Bold baseball team took one of three games this past weekend while dueling it out with the Toronto Varsity Blues and McMaster Marauders. Despite being unable to play out their fourth and final game of the weekend, the Bold collected an abundance of positive results both on and off the field.

The weekend would open up with a pair of games against the reigning OUA champions and in their park, nonetheless. The Varsity Blues went into the Saturday matchup with a perfect 4-0 record and looked to remain untouched against the Bold.

GAME 1 & 2 vs Toronto

The front end of the Bold's two-game set with crosstown rivals Toronto kicked off with a fierce attack right out of the gate.

Cashing in runs was the leading problem in last weekend's four game set to open up the season for TMU. In the top half of the second and third inning, however, the group seemed unfazed with players on the bases and threw up a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead.

Despite the lead being cut down by the Blues in the bottom half, the Bold would double their score following a bases-clearing triple from Domenic Gonzalez.

The Blues responded an inning later with a triple of their own that would cash in two big runs, going head to head with the Bold until the late innings of the ball game.

The home side took the lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning and wouldn't look back, closing their 8-6 win in the seventh.

The Blues offence would carry over into the second game as well, putting up a trio of runs on the Bold early on.

In this low event affair, TMU would watch their best chance of the ball game dwindle away after grounding into a double play with the bases juiced.

Doubling their score in the bottom of the fifth, Toronto took care of business the rest of the way to secure the series win. Catcher Ben Barzo added to his RBI total in the top of the seventh inning to break the shutout bid for the Bold.

GAME 3 vs McMaster

The Bold's first and only match on Sunday saw the group get behind the eight ball in the second inning, with the visiting Marauders drawing first blood off a timely hit and run.

Yet just as they did against the Varsity Blues, TMU responded the very next inning and took a 2-1 lead into the fourth and with a well-executed hit and run of their own.

The Bold's biggest inning of the weekend would come in the bottom half of the sixth inning while they led McMaster by a 7-5 score. A double down the left field line by infielder Thomas Markus would cash in a pair of runs to extend the Bold's lead even further.

Another runner would touch the plate for both sides before the game got called in the top half of the seventh inning due to poor conditions on the field. With the victory, the Bold improved their record to 2-5 as they head into a pivotal four-game set with York and Windsor.

The Bold will play host to the York Lions next Saturday at Bishops Cross. First pitch flies at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
