Bold squander lead, fall to Ridgebacks in season opener

OSHAWA, Ont. - Late goals and a trio of red cards squandered the TMU Bold's bid for a victory as the visitors dropped their opening game of the season by a score of 2-1.

Luca Di Marco, Mario McLennon and Ali Ghazanfari would all be subjects to the referee's back pocket, leaving the Bold to fight an uphill battle through most of the second half.

After a scoreless and relatively silent first half, the offensive pace began to pick up right out of the locker room. The two sides opened up the second stanza with a pair of goal-line stops on shots that looked destined for the back of the goal.

It wouldn't take much longer for both of these teams to find the scoresheet, with the Bold taking the first crack at doing so in the 53rd minute. Finishing off a favourable deflection off a Ridgebacks defender, third-year forward Luca Di Marco blasted a shot into the bottom left corner to give the Bold a well-deserved 1-0 lead.

Di Marco's time on the pitch came to an emotional close just minutes after the forward put his side up on the Ridgebacks, earning a red card from the referee that led to extensive amounts of chaos in the TMU zone.

By the time the dust settled, the Bold would have a colorful array of cautions to their name as goaltender Ali Ghazanfari and forward Zakaria Abdi would both earn their first bookings of the night.

Following the red card, the Ridgebacks would find themselves in a position of power with the extra man. The home side would not squander their chance at evening the game up, with Adam Klimek scoring in the 70th minute to inject some life into the stands.

Just five minutes after leveling up the score, midfielder Christopher Campoli put together a skillful individual run. Cutting through the Bold defence, Campoli would strike the ball with conviction as he approached the goal and reap the rewards from it with possession of a late 2-1 lead.

Desperate to generate late offence, TMU began to take dangerous routes and chances in an attempt to even up the score. The plan would do more harm to the Bold than anything else, earning a colorful variety of bookings that put an end to the match before the final whistle rang.

The Bold will be back at it this upcoming Sunday when they face off against the Trent Excalibur at Downsview Park. Game kicks off at 3:15.
