Baseball opens season with 1-3 weekend

The TMU Bold kicked off their new season this past weekend, putting together a 1-3 record while visiting both the Brock Badgers and Waterloo Warriors for respective two-game sets.

The team would witness its timely offence dwindle to a halt as the weekend rolled along, a trait that would play a role in each of the four games.

GAME 1 & 2 @ BROCK

The Bold's first test of the new season saw the group string together a memorable stretch of offensive innings against the home-sided Brock Badgers.

The Bold followed up their two-run seventh inning with even more offensive support to take their first lead of the contest. A plethora of base hits would see the Bold touch the plate another five times to give the visitors a commanding 7-3 lead over the Badgers.

The lead would go untouched over the next two innings to hand the Bold their first win of the campaign. In his first official OUA game, catcher Ben Barzo would pick up a pair of hits and drive in a run to earn player of the game honours for the Bold.

The second game of the day however, would see the TMU bats cool down as the contest inched along. The Bold jumped to an early lead in this one, a gap that would be quickly erased by the Badgers.

The home side would lead the Bold by the end of the fourth inning by a 4-3 score. The group would tack on two more runs the very next inning to split the Saturday series with the Bold.

GAME 3 & 4 @ WATERLOO

The cold bats in the back half of Saturday's affair would slowly begin to shape into the same misfortune for the Bold on Sunday afternoon.

Facing off against the Waterloo Warriors, the Toronto side surrendered four runs through just two innings of play.

The Bold's bats began to show some life in the third and fourth inning, respectively, with left fielder Josh Thomas lacing an RBI double into the gap to cut the Warriors lead to just two runs.

Both sides would each score a run to bring the game to a dramatic ninth and final inning. With runners on the bases, the Bold would fail to bring anyone home, dropping the first match by a 5-3 score.

A much more enthusiastic start would put the Bold in a strong position to kick off the second of two matches with the Warriors. The group's two runs in as many innings would be matched by the Warriors as well to keep the tight affair going.

It would not be until the sixth inning where the 2-2 deadlock would be snapped by the home side. A timely single for the Warriors would bring a runner home to give Waterloo the lead. The group would plate two more before closing things out in the bottom half of the seventh.

Cold bats and poor scoring stats with runners on base would be the two features that led to the Bold's winless pair of games on Sunday.

After wrapping up the weekend with a 1-3 record, the Bold will look to get back in the win column with a pair of games lined up against both Toronto and McMaster next weekend. First pitch flies on Saturday morning at Dan Lang Field.
