Rams top Brock in overtime, head to national title game

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Rams women's basketball team have once again taken down the Brock Badgers in an overtime win, this time in the U SPORTS Final 8 semifinals in Kingston.

In a 64-56 victory, it was Rams forward Jama Bin-Edward who provided another stellar performance against the Badgers, putting up 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds on her way to a Player of the Game award.

"Are you kidding me?" said Rams head coach Carly Clarke when talking about Bin-Edward's stat line and performance. "She can do it all."

This afternoon's affair started with the Badgers on top as the Rams struggled from the field, shooting just 27% from the floor and going 2-7 from deep. Brock led 15-12 after the first quarter.

Despite a continuation of shooting struggles in the second, the Rams showcased their trademark defensive dominance and did not allow Brock to make a single three in the quarter. Managing to make three of their own, the Rams scored 13 points in the second but remained down 28-25 at halftime.

Nyamuoch Teny and Mikaela Dodig led the Rams at half with six points each.

The Rams came out of halftime on a mission as they began to make shots and find a variety of ways to score on the floor.

Scoring a game-high of 19 points in the third quarter, the Rams shot efficiently and slowed Brock's offence down with steals, blocks and constant pressure.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Rams led the Badgers 44-39.

Having fallen victim to a Rams comeback just a week ago, the Badgers were determined to not roll over and to have an answer of their own. Brock played a scrappy, hard-nosed fourth quarter that held the Rams to just 10 points and were able to tie the game at 54-54. A series of empty possessions from both teams ensured that this game was headed to overtime yet again.

In overtime, the Rams were sharp and able to shut down the Badgers once again, allowing just one field goal in all of overtime while they scored 10 points of their own.

"We just talked about being there before," shared Clarke when asked about the team's mindset when going into yet another high-pressure moment like today's overtime. "We've been in so many moments like this this season. We've played in how many one or two point games this season? So I think we're just seasoned and able to keep our composure," she added.

When it mattered most, it was Bin-Edward in overtime who came up big with her first three pointer of the game as well as another drive to pull the Rams away.

"I was just able to find the net," said Bin-Edward about her overtime performance.

Looking ahead to the championship game on Sunday, the Rams will take on the No. 3 Winnipeg Wesmen after they defeated the host Queen's Gaels 80-78 in the other semifinal.

Winnipeg might be the biggest team that the Rams have faced this season, with talented centres, forwards and strong guards. Most notably, the Rams will look to hold off fifth-year forward Keylyn Filewich who took home the U SPORTS Player of the Year award earlier this week.

Aside from a tough matchup against a big Winnipeg team, Rams starting guard Kyia Giles will be facing off against her sister, Kyanna Giles, who is the starting guard for the Wesmen.

When asked about the hypothetical matchup prior to the Winnipeg victory, Kyia Giles shared, "Honestly it'd be the greatest experience for myself and just to top off my career and be able to play against her…We played together for three years so it'd be nice to share the court with her one last time."

Kyia and Kyanna both played for the University of Regina between 2017-2019.

The Rams and Wesmen wil tip-off this Sunday at 6 p.m.
