Rams celebrate Senior Night with win over RMC

TORONTO - It was an emotional evening for the Rams women's volleyball team as they celebrated Senior Night and concluded their season with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-9) win over Royal Military College, ending their season with three straight wins.

The Rams celebrated their graduating seniors consisting of 2018 U SPORTS national champions Cailin Wark (outside hitter), Olivia Yang (libero), Alicia Lam (setter), as well as Katelyn Grasman (middle blocker), Samantha Cyrille (libero/outside hitter), and Lauren Wong (setter).

Lam led the Rams and tallied a game-high of 30 assists, as fellow seniors Yang and Cyrille each tallied game-highs of 10 digs.

The match began with the Rams trailing 2-6, but once emotions settled and the blue and gold found their focus, it was smooth sailing as they tallied 13 kills and rolled to a 25-14 first set win.

The second set continued to be a comfortable ride for the Rams, as they showcased a steady passing game, powerful offence, and minimized errors on their way to a 25-10 set win.

To conclude a memorable, joyful, bittersweet night, the Rams eased their way past the Paladins and took the third and final set of their season, winning 25-9.

"The girls on my team are my best friends," said Grasman through teary eyes after the game. "I can't imagine life without them over the past four years. I'm crying because I just love them so much and it's meant so much to have this support this whole time."

Cyrille also touched on her journey, coming out of retirement and what it has meant to be back, saying, "Having the support system here has been everything. I found a family here and I'm sad to leave it."

When discussing the three wins in the last four days, Cyrille also shared, "I think it shows that our team means business in the coming years. That to me is the fun part."

Head coach Dustin Reid, as well as many of the graduating seniors, have had illustrious careers and are used to winning a lot more than the team did this season. Reid expressed his pride in his team after a difficult season, sharing, "We've had a lot of misfortune and a lot of frustration and they've kept things positive and have been really amazing leaders through this process.

"The fact that they were doing that as players who have had a ton of success in their careers, it says a lot about who they are."

With outside hitters Mikayla Sheriffs and Scarlett Gingera leading the attack tonight and looking as strong as ever, it is one of many demonstrations that the Rams women's volleyball program is trending upwards and will be building towards successful campaigns in the future.
