Rams advance to OUA championship after win over Ravens

TORONTO - The Rams women's basketball team clinched a Final 8 nationals berth and secured their spot in the OUA Critelli Cup following their third round playoff win against the Carleton Ravens on Wednesday night.

Defeating the Ravens 60-47, the team exhibited a balanced attack in all aspects of the game, with each player contributing on the court.

Rachel Farwell led in points (12) and rebounds (10), while Michaela Dodig had seven assists, but the team demonstrated a masterclass of collaborative shooting, rebounding, and steal abilities throughout the roster.

"One of the best things about our team is we're unselfish when we move the ball, and everybody's a threat in their own way," head coach Carly Clarke says.

"Tonight was certainly a product of that, with four double-digit scorers and two others with seven," she says.

Veteran player Jama Bin-Edward says the team's depth comes from trusting one another and being adaptable to the adversity and injury that they've faced throughout the season.

"We've had a lot of people coming out and in from injury," Bin-Edward says. "It's about using the pieces we have that game…any of us can score double digit points, it's just a matter of who's going to go off that day."

The Rams spent the first quarter establishing their dominance on home court.

Stefanija Mrvaljevic opened the scoring for what would become an 8-0 run for the Rams off the bat, as they kept Carleton scoreless in the first five minutes.

Late into the quarter, a statement block from Eve Uwayesu finished up the first with the Rams leading 11-6.

Carleton tied the score three minutes into the second, the closest they got to the lead all night.

And while the Rams allowed double the turnovers of the opposing team throughout the quarter, the team's ball movement and shooting abilities played a key role in maintaining control of the second.

At the half, the Rams were up by three.

The third quarter saw both teams playing their best basketball, but the Rams stayed ahead despite the Ravens trailing close behind.

And in the fourth, the team left it all on the court. Uwayesu and Bin-Edward pushed their way into the paint, driving the lead upward until the final buzzer.

The Rams will now head to St. Catharines for the OUA Critelli Cup championship this Saturday against the Brock Badgers. You can tune in at OUA.tv.
