Women's basketball begin playoff run hosting Gaels

TORONTO - The Rams women's basketball team will be taking on the visiting Queen's Gaels this Saturday night in their third matchup of the season, but this time in the OUA Critelli Cup quarter-final.

While the Rams came out on top in both of their matchups this regular season, both games were closely contested games that the Gaels will look to build on.

The Gaels are fresh off an OUA play-in game win on Wednesday night over the York Lions where a big fourth quarter propelled them to a 74-65 win on their home court.

The Rams, on the other end, will come into this game well rested as a regular season bye week and a first-round playoff bye saw them have 13 days of rest heading into Saturday.

Queen's recorded a 9-5 record this season, spending the first half of the campaign nationally ranked, and only losing to the Rams twice, Gee-Gees, Ravens and Lions once. The Gaels are a well-balanced team that fall into the OUA's top-10 in almost every statistical category, and have four players averaging over 9.5 points per game.

Most notably, the Gaels like to play through leading scorer and fourth year forward Julia Chadwick, who tallied a massive 22 points and 23 rebounds on Wednesday against the Lions.

With not a lot of weaknesses in the Gaels game, the Rams will look to exploit their field goal defence, as they sit out of the top-10 in both opponents field goal and opponents three-point percentage. With such a dangerous shooting team like the Rams, who led the league in both field goal and three point percentage, Saturday could be a strong shooting display.

Also leading the league in steals and turnover rate, it is clear that the Rams' guard play is where they hurt teams most, with relentless offensive and defensive pressure from Mikaela Dodig, Marin Scotten, Stefanija Mrvaljevic and Kaillie Hall.

In the front court, however, the Rams will have their leading scorer Rachel Farwell and former OUA All-Star Jama Bin-Edward to throw at the Gaels, two players who have played in numerous big games and have scored big numbers.

Tip-off on Saturday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre will be at 6 p.m. and tickets can be found here. Join us pre-game as 4KORNERS, the official DJ of the Toronto Raptors, gets the MAC rocking in anticipation of tip-off.
