Rams advance to round two after blowout against Voyageurs

TORONTO - A full house came out to watch the Rams men's basketball team take home court Wednesday night in their blowout 92-61 win against the Laurentian Voyageurs in the first round of OUA playoffs.

Throughout the game, "MVP" chants could be heard in the crowd for Rams first-year forward Aaron Rhooms, who put up a season-best performance of 29 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 91 per cent in the field and perfect in threes and free throws.

"I can't emphasize how much support the team and coaches have given me this past season," Rhooms says, reflecting on the progress of his performance.

"I want to do everything I can for this group of guys," he says. "We mean so much to one another off the court, and it translates on the court and gives us the ability to do what we did tonight."

The Rams took an early lead in the first.

Veteran Jaaden Lewis and Elijah Roye drove to the net. Halfway through, the team looked a little lost with their shooting, but threes by Nick Hamilton and Rhooms put them back in the lead by the end of the quarter.

Laurentian opened the second with a three, but Rams Mouhamed Ndiaye quickly matched it, followed by another one by Rhooms. With the Rams up by nine, the Voyageurs called a timeout at seven minutes.

The lead only grew though. Shooting 44 per cent and 42 from downtown, the Rams put on a clinic in ball movement and threes throughout the rest of the quarter, a performance that had the full house at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on their feet.

At the half, the Rams were up 37-23.

The defence the team had worked on all season showed in the third, as the Rams stole possessions left and right, up and down the court.

The quarter saw fast, tiring basketball, but the Rams kept their eye on the ball. With eight rebounds and four second-chance baskets, the team played stingy, creating a 20 point lead with five minutes left in the third.

Ndiaye put up three three-pointers throughout the quarter, and the Rams were leading by 19 going into the fourth.

The team closed the game out in the final quarter, and the fourth saw hanging rim dunks from Rhooms and Elijah Roye, with Ndiaye ending the game with 18 points. They left it all on the court to a screaming crowd that cheered until the buzzer went off.

The Rams will be heading to Ottawa this Saturday for round two of the playoffs. They'll be facing off against long-time rivals, the Carleton Ravens, who are undefeated this season and defending 2019 champions.

"If you're any kind of competitive athlete, this is the game you want to be playing," head coach David DeAveiro says. "Going in as an underdog, we're going to go out there and give it our best, and we'll see what happens."

Tipoff for Saturday's game is scheduled for 8 p.m. and you can tune in at OUA.tv.
