Rams end whirlwind season in playoff battle with Nipissing

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Though the Rams women's hockey team fell 3-1 and were eliminated on Saturday night, they showed resilience in an effort reminiscent of their up-and-down season.

The Rams hit the ice well-rested after arriving in North Bay on Friday. First-year forward Brooke Michaud bolstered the lineup, returning after her injury earlier in the season. However, leading goal scorer Lauren Nicholson didn't dress for the game and Erika Crouse left for the locker room in the second as she continued to battle injuries.

Senior goalie Rachel Seeley made 29 key saves in the loss, while Brooklyn Gemmill converted the Rams' lone goal.

An early flurry led by Savannah Bouzide saw the Lakers go off for body checking less than five minutes in. A slow start to the power play was overcome by a slick centering pass from Cailey Davis. The puck found Olivia Giardetti, who forced a rebound that was tapped in by a trailing Gemmill.

Though Gemmill and the Rams celebrated hard on their way back to the bench, their 1-0 lead lasted only a few minutes. A giveaway from the Rams' top line proved costly when Brianna Gaffney went in on a 3-on-1 rush and blew it by Seeley to tie it up.

Late in the frame, each squad had to kill off penalties while the Rams bargained for more calls before the intermission.

Gaffney struck again in the second off an early Lakers power play. A tipped shot from the point reached her by the crease with an open net.

Emily Baxter answered with a rush, but it was stopped by a scrambling Chloe Marshall in the Nipissing net.

In the third, Mia Morano narrowly missed a chance on the backhand while the Rams lagged behind in shots.

Seeley saved the game halfway through the frame, diving across to her blocker side to deny a chance from Emma Thomas. She stopped a breakaway with under two minutes to go as the Rams called a timeout, still down 2-1.

Giardetti drew a late tripping call, and the stage was set for the final 50 seconds of play with Seeley pulled to the bench. After throwing themselves at the net, including a sharp shot from Baxter, Nipissing eventually knocked the puck free. None other than Gaffney pounced on it and slung it into the open cage to seal the 3-1 win for the Lakers, eliminating the Rams.

Though the season has come to an end, the Rams can celebrate another successful playoff run. With up to eight senior players graduating this year, they will look towards the off-season to build their squad and hit fresh ice in a new, hopefully calmer, 2022-23 season.
