TORONTO — It's no secret that the Rams women's volleyball team has struggled so far this season, playing to an 0-8 record and winning only three sets in eight matches. But, for all of their struggles, it's never too late to turn things around, which the Rams will surely hope to do in their Friday matchup against the Toronto Varsity Blues, which gets started at 6 p.m. at Toronto's Goldring Centre.
The Varsity Blues (6-0) have historically had the upper hand on the Rams, who own a 9-20 record against their crosstown rivals. Still, the blue and gold beat the Blues in three sets on the road on January 4, 2020, and took them to five sets in November of 2019.
Rams fans should look for middle Ashley Ditchfield and left side Scarlett Gingera to make an impact, both of whom led the way in the team's loss to the York Lions on Saturday, February 12. Elsewhere, rookies Zoe Kuck, Sarah Zonneveld and Mary Ann Rioflorido are primed to propel the Rams in the second half of the season. On the opposite side of the court, Varsity Blues setter Hayley Goodwin leads all OUA players in assists per set, while outside hitter Julia Murmann is second in the league in kills per set. In the OUA East division, the Varsity Blues sit in second place behind York and are tailed closely by Nipissing and Queen's. Â
After their Friday tilt, the Rams will welcome the Varsity Blues to the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Saturday evening.Â
Friday's match at the Goldring Centre will be closed to spectators. Tickets are available for Saturday's home game here.
