Rams come from behind, slide past Lions in thrilling Saturday night tilt

TORONTO — In their second game in three nights against the York Lions, the Rams men's hockey team clawed their way back into a tough and wild game and vanquished their division rivals by a score of 4-3.

As they did on Thursday, the Rams came out firing, attacking York defenders and constantly firing pucks at Lions goaltender Cole Ceci early. Though the team had several chances courtesy of Jeremiah Addison, Domenico Commisso, and Kyle Bollers, things remained scoreless after the first period.

In the second frame, the blue and gold continued their aggressive streak, passing swiftly through the neutral zone and commanding the early parts of the period. But, following a stellar post-to-post save from Ceci at one end, York's CJ Clarke slid one past Rams netminder Garrett Forrest at the other end to open the scoring halfway through the period. Minutes later, the Rams evened things up when Jackson Doherty found Ryan Wells, who fired a scorching shot over the moving shoulder of Ceci. Before the period came to a close, the Lions were able to retake the lead on Brendan Browne's fourth goal of the season.

Both teams traded solid chances early in the third, but it was the Rams who broke through when Commisso crossed up Ceci at the end of a long shift to tie the game at 2-2. Minutes later, Addison took a Joe Rupoli pass up ice on a long breakaway. With a quick flick of his wrist, Addison scored his third goal of the campaign and gave the Rams their first lead of the contest. It wouldn't last long however, as York's Benjamin Evanish buried a loose puck in front of Forrest soon after to tie things once again.

Always dramatic, the Rams turned to veteran forward Jesse Barwell, who smacked a Bollers pass past Ceci with three minutes remaining in regulation to give the Rams the lead and, ultimately, the win. In the dying seconds, the Lions put all their energy into a last-minute push, but couldn't beat the sprawling Forrest who, with the help of the Rams defenders, shut the door. When it was all said and done, the Rams had scored three third period goals to earn their seventh victory of the season in thrilling fashion.

Due to COVID-related rescheduling, the Rams' next game will be on Tuesday, February 15, when they'll welcome the Brock Badgers to the Mattamy Athletic Centre at 6 p.m.
