Mustangs top Bold for second straight night

LONDON, Ont. - Despite a hard-fought effort, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-18) to the Western Mustangs on Saturday night at Alumni Hall.

The Bold fell in a hole early and weren't able to recover as the Mustangs quickly ran away with each set. Throughout the evening, TMU tried clawing back into the game with multiple points and kills in a row, but the Mustangs were able to snuff out each attempt.

In the first set, the score was close early, but the Mustangs rattled off five points in a row via errors and kills to make it 11-5. Later in the game, the score became close again as it was 19-15, however, numerous errors cost the Bold as Western was able to extend their lead to eight and eventually took the set 25-16.

The Mustangs then had full momentum on their side heading into the next stage of the night. The second set featured a more back-and-forth affair, however, Josiah Esau took over for the purple and white. The Western setter repeatedly set up his fellow Mustangs for kills to put the set away by 10.

Nevertheless, the Bold looked to respond, yet, the final set was no different. The Mustangs stormed out to an early lead and the Bold couldn't find an answer to the opposing surge. Western eventually wrapped up the set and match 25-18.

Alex King and Nicholas Hudson led the way for the blue and gold with nine kills each. Meanwhile, Esau had a match-high 30 assists for the purple and white.

TMU now looks ahead to next Saturday as they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in their home opener and search for the first victory of the season. The first serve is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
