Bold battle but drop season opener to Varsity Blues

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball team opened up their regular season with a loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday evening, falling 61-57.

The four point loss to the Blues snapped the Bold's six game winning streak against their crosstown rivals, a run that lasted nearly four consecutive seasons within the former Rams side.

"We weren't able to take care of business down the stretch. At this point we have to figure out how to get over the hump," said head coach Carly Clarke following the loss.

A sluggish start greeted the Bold to open up the group's highly-anticipated 2022-23 campaign. Despite wrapping up the first quarter deadlocked with the Blues at 10-apiece, the Bold turned the ball over nine times while struggling to contain the visitors on the rush.

Despite their defence weathering the storm through most of the second quarter, the Bold failed to manage the Blues in transition as the visitors continuously marched into the Bold defensive zone with ease. By the time halftime rolled around, the Blues would lead their rivals by just a single point, and on the backs of their red-hot transition play.

Second-year Jayme Foreman and fifth-year Rachell Farwell overhauled the offensive load for the home side through two quarters of play, with the latter draining her first shot of the match from well outside the paint.

Foreman's magic touch from the perimeter is something Clarke believes the team needs to be successful, with the second-year guard being "a threat everywhere on the floor."

The third quarter is where the Bold got their offence in tune as they worked to claw out of their halftime deficit. Farwell led the comeback for the home side, racking up seven points throughout the quarter while draining all four of her free throws.

Foreman also played a big role in the Bold's most dominant quarter of the game, laying in a pair of three-pointers to highlight her 12 point performance in the season opener.

Despite the Bold leading the charge in the third frame, it would be the Blues that took full control when it mattered most. The group capped off their 20-point fourth quarter by cashing in on three consecutive possessions midway through the final stanza.

Jada Poon-Tip and Jessica Muha led the attack for the visitors, combining for 15 points in the Blues most dangerous quarter of the evening. Toronto's star power would get the best of the Bold in the final frame and hand the home side their first official loss in nearly two years.

The two teams square off once more on Wednesday as the Bold play visitors to their crosstown rivals. Tip off is set for 6:00 from the Goldring Centre.
