Bold secure first win in dominating fashion over Algoma

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's basketball squad dismantled the visiting Algoma Thunderbirds earlier this afternoon, picking up their first win of the season by a 91-40 score line.

First-year Kait Nichols led the Bold in their final home game of the calendar year, matching her 16 points with just as many rebounds in her side's dominant showing.

"They say I have that dog mentality," said Nichols laughing, following her dominant performance.

The rookie's 16 rebounds now stands in the program record books, tied for fifth most all-time for the Bold.

The visitors matched the Bold's early dominance in the paint with quick passes around the perimeter, converting on nearly half of their opportunities as a result. Rachel Farwell led the drive for the home side, scorching the Thunderbirds with a game-high eight points before the end of the first frame.

"They were a little smaller than us so we kept attacking the paint…It really worked well for us," said Nichols.

Despite the early charge, Algoma would hit TMU with consecutive threes to stub the momentum of the home side and wrap up the first quarter in a one-possession game.

The Bold made sure to widen the gap on the visitors throughout the second quarter, however, with Nichols cashing in on four-consecutive free-throws to open up the floodgates for TMU.

"She's so young, so consistent, and such a big part of our team," said teammate Jayme Foreman on the play of Nichols early on.

A 12-point run would ensue for the home side before Brooke Guhn stopped the bleeding for the Thunderbirds with yet another three pointer.

Head coach of the Bold Carly Clarke believed the turn in ferocity between the first and second quarter had much to do with the group locking Algoma down defensively, mentioning how "once we cleaned that up that made a big difference."

The situation would only get worse for the last-place Thunderbirds, violating the shot clock twice, and allowing the Bold to double their first quarter score to lead 51-29 at the half.

The third quarter proved no different for the blue and gold, setting a season high in points before the midway mark of the frame.

Second-years Haley Fedick and Sarai Bailey paved the way for the Bold on the attack, with the latter cashing in four points off the bench as part of the team's 13-point drive to open up the frame.

Clarke praised Bailey's tenacity on the ball in the blowout win, mentioning how her decision making skills were dialed in.

"She took care of it and found her open looks," added Clarke.

Algoma would be held to just four points in the quarter to emphasize the Bold's dominance on both sides of the ball and widen the gap to nearly 40 points by the end of the quarter. The group would tack on 21 more points in the fourth and final quarter to hand the Thunderbirds their fourth 40-point loss of the season.

With the win, the Bold now look towards a four game road trip to close out the fall season. Their first stop lies in Sudbury when they take on the Laurentian Voyageurs next Friday. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
