Bold drop home opener to Lakers after slow start

TORONTO - A rough first period for the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold resulted in a 4-1 loss against the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday afternoon in their home opener at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Outside of the latter half of the first frame, the Bold continued to generate chances throughout the afternoon and eventually found the back of the net with a goal from Brooklyn Gemmill, but it was too little, too late after all.

"We know it's important for us to execute what we need to do, but we got away from that in the first and [Nipissing] is a team that is going to make you pay," said Bold head coach, Lisa Haley.

Early in the opening 20 minutes, the Bold had the game's first great scoring chance as forward Gaby Gareau struck the post, but couldn't convert on the opportunity.

Soon after, the Lakers found themselves in front with a goal as Nipissing defender Madison Laberge rifled a shot past Bold netminder Jayden Lawson with less than eight minutes remaining in the period.

Less than two minutes later, the breakdown continued for the Bold. Nipissing was able to double their lead as forward Katie Chomiak made it 2-0 for the Lakers with a shot that snuck through traffic. The lead then extended to three before the end of the frame with Chomiak tallying her second of the afternoon.

By the end of the first, the shot counter was 14-4 in favour of the Lakers and the Bold deficit was three.

"The first period was definitely a challenging learning curve," said Gareau. "We were kind of moving the puck around like a hot potato."

The Bold responded well in the second as they outshot the Lakers 14-9. They had the best chance of the middle frame as Gareau nearly scored on a solo effort, but was unable to put it by Lakers netminder Chloe Marshall.

Despite their efforts and improved play, the Bold couldn't capitalize in the middle 20.

"I felt like we sorted things out and really went toe-to-toe with them over the last 40," said Haley.

The third was much of the same as the Bold kept piling on scoring opportunities but the Lakers' defence and Marshall stood tall for the majority of the period.

Nonetheless, Gareau continued to have an incredible afternoon individually in terms of creating chances as she had another great look near the Lakers' goal, but was denied by Marshall.

"Gaby, in particular, I thought had her best game of the season," said Haley. "Would have been nice to see her get one there because she certainly found her way to the net many times."

On the other hand, the first-year forward believes there is always area for her game to develop further.

"I think there's definitely room for improvement. Possession and battling were two of my focuses heading into the game, but just need to work on executing and finishing those opportunities," said Gareau.

With the goalie pulled, Gemmill was able to squeak one past the Lakers netminder as Marshall couldn't snag the puck with her glove and it bounced over her and into the net. However, the Cambridge, Ont. native's second of the season didn't amount to much as the Lakers quickly put the comeback to a halt with an empty-net goal.

The Bold's record now drops 1-1-0-0 and now sit third in the OUA East division after two games.

The blue and gold now look ahead to their game next Friday against the Toronto Varsity Blues at home. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.

"They're another team that is consistently at the top of the OUA, so we definitely got our work cut for us. I see us as the underdogs there, but that's fine. We got to earn our stripes," said Haley.
