Bollers' multi-goal night helps Bold begin year with a win

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team opened their season on the right foot with a two-goal performance from forward Kyle Bollers and a 3-1 victory against the York Lions on Friday night at Canlan Ice Sports.

The game began with some end-to-end action as both squads looked to get on the board early. The first scoring chance came off the stick of Lions forward Owen Gilhula as his shot rang off the post. However, the puck was unable to squeak past Bold netminder Kai Edmonds, who was in his first-ever U SPORTS start after receiving the nod from head coach Johnny Duco.

Soon later, the Bold stormed out to the lead with a goal from Bollers. The Oshawa, Ont. native hunted down a loose puck on the forecheck to start a cycle in the Bold's offensive zone. After a shot from Jesse Barwell went wide of the goal, last season's OUA West leading scorer pounced on the chance to put TMU ahead.

The Bold didn't stop there in the first frame. With around five minutes left in the period, Bollers doubled the TMU lead with his second goal of the affair.

Following a turnover at the Lions' blueline, Bollers started a Bold rush and found defenceman Aaron Hyman who put a shot on net. York goalie Cole Ceci wasn't able to corral the rebound and the forward took advantage to capitalize on the opportunity.

Although the Lions went into the first intermission down by two, the red and white kept pushing to find the response. Five minutes into the second period, the Lions found the answer they were looking for as York forward Ben Evanish roofed a shot past Edmonds after a neutral-zone break to cut the Bold lead in half.

In the later stages of the middle 20, the back-and-forth action continued between the crosstown rivals. Around the seven-minute mark, the Bold had a three-on-one breakaway but weren't able to convert. Subsequently, the Lions had a scoring opportunity of their own as the puck went up the ice, however, Edmonds stood tall to maintain the Bold lead.

TMU held the close margin for the remainder of the frame after the Lions threatened late with back-to-back power plays before the second intermission.

Midway through the final period, the Lions thought they had found the equalizer when defencemen Klim Georgiev jumped up in the rush and found Gilhula. However, Edmonds denied another glorious York opportunity.

Shortly after, TMU doubled their lead once again with a goal from forward Chris Playfair. A series of quick passes from the Bold led to a shot from forward William Portokalis and Ceci couldn't control the rebound. Playfair arrived at the loose puck first and put one past the Lions' netminder to add in the insurance policy.

The blue and gold held strong for the rest of the game to secure the two points and Edmonds received his first-ever win in OUA hockey.

TMU now looks ahead to Saturday's matchup against another crosstown rival, the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
