Bold fall in qualifier final to Varsity Blues

BRAMPTON, Ont. - The TMU Bold baseball team saw their 2022 season come to a close this past Sunday, dropping the final game of the OUA Central Regionals to the Toronto Varsity Blues by an 11-1 score.

Despite starting off their final matchup with a Devon Capitao home run in the top of the first inning, the Varsity Blues would bring a carbon copy of their best outing this season. The team's starter made a statement against the Bold, as pitcher Kevin Angers twirled five innings of one-run baseball while fanning ten of the Bold's bats en route to the Blues second consecutive Finals victory over TMU.

In light of the lopsided loss, the Bold baseball program has come a long way from where it sat even a year ago. This past season saw all facets of the group break out in a memorable way, with history being made almost every weekend.

A program-best 10-6-1 overall record, three active weeks without recording a loss and the team's first ever perfect game pitched accumulates to just a handful of key moments that suggest something greater is to come out of this group sooner, rather than later.

Among other things, this past weekend showed the limitless amount of ammunition that lies in the Bold's arsenal, as player after player stepped up in key moments and unique ways. Friday afternoon saw the Bold trounce the York Lions by a 12-2 score, with the game already being a rout in the seventh inning.

That same night, the Bold out-duelled a scrappy Laurentian side, taking care of business a day later by putting up 11 runs to the Voyageurs eight. With their ticket to the finals already punched, the Bold wrapped up their group play with a 10-10 tie against the Blues.

In a game heavily dictated by the team's bench, the Bold may have very well gotten a glimpse into the future outlook of their program as many of the younger players dominated during their time on the field.

Third-year Josh Thomas was among the crowd of players that took full advantage of the postseason weekend, putting up a trio of hits against York on Friday, and driving in just as many runs later that night against Laurentian.

Although it didn't end on a high, baseball at TMU is in a foreign place at the moment. So much success and so much potential rests in this group, with every ounce of it destined to be poured out as early as next fall.

The OUA is one of Ontario's most prestigious collegiate baseball leagues, and if they haven't already, teams across the province will most definitely understand that nowadays, baseball is bold at Toronto Metropolitan University.
