Rams open season with road win over rival Toronto

TORONTO -  The Rams men's soccer team pulled out a 1-0 road win on Saturday afternoon against crosstown rivals Toronto Varsity Blues.

Rams veteran attacker Abdallah El-Chanti (Toronto) found the net on a penalty kick to secure the huge three points to open the season.

Despite a 0-0 score after the first half, it was an eventful 45 minutes with the Rams dominating the chances created.

The opening 10 minutes saw two significant scoring chances from rookie winger Justin Santos, but was kept off the score sheet thanks to last stitch defending from the Blues.

Rams rookies kept the offense firing as midfielder Jacob Carlos was through on goal but was once again stopped by Blues keeper Ben Grodin.

The 30th minute saw Blues midfielder Anthony Sousa receive a red card, giving the Rams a man advantage in a game they were already in command of. However, the Blues held the Rams off going into halftime.

Coming into a wet and windy second half, the Rams were looking to convert on their dominance and did so in the 50th minute when captain El-Chanti put away a penalty kick he had won as he was fouled in the box during an impressive one on one play.

The Rams held the majority of the possession in the second, with centrebacks Brandon Barone (King City, Ont) and Christian Westlaken (Toronto) commandingly holding the back line together.

"The sign of great centrebacks is when they go unnoticed," said Rams head coach Filip Prostran when praising the simplicity of Barone and Westlaken's play.

On the other end of the pitch, Santos continued to trouble the Blues defense with continuous runs on the left flank, putting together a stellar OUA debut.

"It was great to get the first game down," said Santos. "The team played great and I thought I had a pretty good game."

"For his first game away at UofT, he did a lot of good things. As a first year player, this will be a great experience for him," added Prostran.

Looking ahead to a rematch against the Blues this Saturday, October 2nd at Downsview Park, Prostran touched on the rivalry of the Blues and the Rams.

"It's always a blood bath," said Prostran, "there isn't much to separate the two teams when we play each other."

"It'll be a different beast next week I can guarantee you that," Prostran concluded.
