Late leads slip away as Rams fall to Gaels

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Rams men's volleyball team will be wishing they could have closed out their leads in both the first and fourth sets as they wound up on the losing end of a 3-1 score (23-25, 21-25, 25-21, 22-25) on Saturday afternoon in their second consecutive matchup against the Queen's Gaels.

The Rams opened the match with lots of energy and built a quick 6-2 lead which extended to 16-11 at the first set technical timeout after a Saad Shaikh service ace. Down the stretch the Rams committed a pair of attack errors to let the Gaels back into the set, and Queen's eventually took the lead at 23-22. The home side was able to steal the set after an overpass by the Rams led to an easy put back as Queen's claimed the first, 25-23.

In the second it was the Rams who found themselves trailing 16-11 at the technical timeout, but a four point run out of the break gave them some life. Queen's responded with kills from three different positions on the floor and sealed the set at 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead overall.

Eager to notch their first set win of the year after being swept on Friday night, the Rams showed lots of resilience in the third set and built a 16-11 advantage at the break. Their lead was never in jeopardy and a Derek Webster kill finished the set at 25-21 to extend the match.

In the fourth, the Rams defence really picked up its intensity and was able to recover a lot of balls and turn them into points. The Rams led by three at the technical timeout as they looked to send the match to a fifth set, but Queen's stepped up their block defence and built some momentum of their own. The Gaels tied the set at 20-20 and then showed their experience down the stretch. Lachlan McBride put down a kill to give Queen's a 24-22 lead and then a block halted a Webster attack to end the set at 25-22.

Jacob Walker led the Rams with 14 kills while Webster added 12. Alex King had a good day at the net, hitting for eight kills while getting in on six blocks (one solo, five assisted).

The Rams fall to 0-2 on the season and will look to get in the win column when they host the York Lions in their home opener next Saturday, November 13.
