Lions top Rams in extra time thriller

TORONTO - In one of the most competitive games of the OUA season, the Rams men's soccer team lost a 3-2 extra time affair in the OUA semifinals, with the No. 2 York Lions putting an end to their season.

Similar to other high-stakes matches this season, the Rams found themselves on their back foot as the Lions had a clear cut chance to score in the opening minute, with a York attacker just missing the open goal.

The opening 10 minutes saw the Lions be the more aggressive side of the two, and their play was rewarded in the 11th minute when York attacker Omar Marzouk scored a header off a corner kick to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Marzouk, a tricky offensive player, gave the Rams problems throughout the entirety of Saturday night's match.

Following the goal, the Rams created chances of their own, with left-winger Justin Santos creating a pair of opportunities from the flank, but no final product was to be found early in the game.

Halfway through the first half, Rams defender Christian Westlaken committed a foul, earning him a yellow, but the foul sparked a harsh reaction from Lions defender Gabriel Johdan, who was then punished with a red card for his actions and brought the Lions down to 10 men.

Despite the man advantage, the Rams conceded yet another goal off of a Lions counter attack, with York attacker Soji Olatoye putting one away in the 44th minute to give the Lions a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Just minutes after the start of the second half, the Rams brought themselves back within one thanks to a Westlaken goal off of a challenging corner kick by Abdallah El-Chanti.

With the match becoming fast and fiery and the Rams retaining most of the possession, the game was open and the Rams were creating a load of chances in the York half.

Finally, the Rams found their equalizer as Rams centre back Brandon Barone scored a header for his first OUA goal. With the score now being 2-2, the Rams and Lions were heading to extra time to decide the semifinal outcome.

The extra time was a back-and-forth period of play, with both teams desperately looking for a goal to put them ahead. Finally in the 117th minute, just when penalty kicks were looking certain, Lions midfielder Niko Sigur scored an impressive goal to seal the 3-2 win for York.

Despite the loss, the Rams showed character in their final match of the season, and were easily the No. 2 Lions' biggest challenge so far this campaign.
