Rams come home victorious against Ridgebacks

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Rams men's basketball team brought home an 85-82 win Wednesday night in a lengthy overtime victory against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.

Despite being away from home and against a full Ridgebacks crowd, the team pushed through a tight, back-and-forth game to improve to a 2-3 record.

The Rams opened scoring nicely, with Ankit Choudhary landing a three right off the bat. From there, the first quarter saw the team's offence driving to the net, shooting from downtown, and getting the offensive rebound to score. Rams forward Elijah Roye put up 10 points in the first, shooting two perfect threes.

By the second quarter, the Rams were all warmed up. The team put on an offensive clinic, shooting with ease and making clean plays at the net.

Halfway through the quarter, the Rams made a play to the basket, passing and taking their time on the Ridgebacks' side, and ending in a shot from downtown by Roye. Kayode Fakomi followed with an offensive rebound to land a dunk in their next possession.

They gave up points in their lack of defence though, allowing seven turnovers in the first two quarters. At halftime, the Rams lead 42-36.

Ontario Tech came back with a vengeance in the third. They were more aggressive on offence, learning to take advantage of the Rams' turnovers. The Ridgebacks were quick to close the scoring gap, racking up points in the first three minutes until they were only one point behind before taking the lead with a jump shot. Their run didn't last long however, and Mouhamed Ndiaye landed a three to stay ahead by five points.

Roye opened the fourth quarter with a shot from downtown, but a rowdy Oshawa crowd kept the Ridgebacks' energy going. At halfway through the last quarter, Ontario Tech took over the lead, and the Rams were down two points with three minutes left in the game.

After two timeouts within the next two minutes, the Rams stopped shooting threes and began solely driving the ball to the net. Aaron Rhooms tipped the ball in over and over again and tied the game 75-75 with 20 seconds left.

Overtime had the crowd holding their breath. The Rams gave up vital free throws and possessions in the first two minutes. It wasn't until the last minute in the game that Ndiaye and Tyler Sagl both landed threes, taking the lead by two. With seven seconds left in the game, the Ridgebacks attempted a last-ditch three-pointer, which didn't go, solidifying the Rams victory.

"We really had to dig in, be disciplined on offence, and move the ball," head coach David DeAveiro said about what the team talked about before going into overtime and winning the game. "We also reminded [the team] of the defence drills we practiced throughout the week, and they really applied it out on the court."

The Rams will finish their series in Oshawa this Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m., and you can tune in at OUA.tv.
