Young Rams compete in tight 3-0 loss to No. 9 Blues

TORONTO - The Rams men's volleyball team fell 3-0 at the Goldring Centre on Saturday night as they battled in three tight sets (23-25, 23-25, 22-25) to the veteran No. 9 Varsity Blues.

Former Queens Gael and graduate student Mitchell Neuert had a game-high of 17 kills, while rookie outside hitter Jacob Walker led the Rams with 10 kills.

The opening set very much set the tone for what this matchup would look like, with long exchanges thanks to strong defensive plays. The Blues took the lead 16-13 at the opening technical timeout, but Rams outside hitter Lucas Yang led the game with four kills. As the Blues led 20-17, the Rams brought it back to 24-23, but the Blues closed it out with one of five Neuert kills of the set.

The Rams took an early 9-6 lead in the second set, but the Blues answered with a 7-2 run and eventually got it to a 16-15 lead at the technical timeout. Similar to the first set, the Blues kept a slim lead through the later stages of the set, but the Rams refused to fold as they came back from 24-20 to force a Blues timeout at 24-22 and another at 24-23. Once again however, the Blues managed to finish strong and took the second 25-23.

Despite the Blues leading 7-3 in kills after the first 15 points, the Rams only trailed 7-8 to begin the third, showcasing their defensive tenacity at the net and in the backcourt. With Neuert continuing to dominate on the outside, the Blues led 16-14 at the third technical. For the third straight set, the Blues had a comfortable lead late in the set, only to allow a Rams run to make things interesting. The Rams came back from 24-20 to force two straight Blues timeouts as they brought it to 24-22, but the veteran Blues once again found a way to secure their third set victory.

Despite the 3-0 loss, the young Rams looked encouraging and held their own against an experienced Blues team, as rookies Walker and Yang combined for 17 kills, while libero Lhexen Rabit led the game in digs with 12.

For Toronto, it was the two former Queens Gaels and OUA champions Neuert and setter Zane Grossinger who shined, as Grossinger tallied a game-high of 35 assists and made his attackers lives easy all night.

The Rams will be back in action next weekend against the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay and will be live on OUA.tv on Friday at 9 p.m and Saturday at 6 p.m.
