Rams down Lakers in North Bay for second win of the season

NORTH BAY, Ont. - On a cool and cloudy evening in North Bay, the Rams men's soccer team took care of business, beating the Nipissing Lakers 2-1 for their second victory of the season. For the Rams, their first trip to North Bay represented a crucial opportunity for them to get back in the win column after last week's loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues.

During the game's first ten minutes, the Rams mounted a solid attack against the steady Lakers defence, but couldn't break through until the 15th minute, when Abdallah El-Chanti snuck a penalty kick to the left of Nipissing keeper Ryan Miners, who dove to his right.

In the 25th minute, the Lakers answered, tying the game on a near-perfect shot from midfielder Cedric Devos. Though the Lakers had their chance to jump ahead on a powerful free kick near the end of the half, things were knotted up heading into the break.

In the second half, Rams keeper Praveen Ahilan kept the match tied in the 66th minute with a stunning sliding save, the energy from which propelled the Rams to a spectacular second goal in the 81st minute courtesy of Zakaria Abdi

After all was said and done, the Rams kept the Lakers from coming back, thwarting any incoming offence and protecting their zone during the match's last 20 minutes.

The Rams are back in action on Sunday, when they'll turn around and welcome the Lakers to Downsview Park at 2:30 p.m.
