HAMILTON, Ont. - An 80th minute goal from
Skylar Sheehan-Alleyene propelled the Rams women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the McMaster Marauders, keeping the Rams alive in the playoff race.
Desperate for a win, the Rams were on the offensive all game, outshooting McMaster 8-1 in the first half and 17-6 by the final whistle.
Following a 0-0 draw against McMaster earlier in the week and the first half resulting in nothing to show on the scoreboard, it felt like the Rams were in tough to beat Marauders keeper Jayashree Pathak.
The Rams didn't let their frustrations get to them though, and they came out strong in the second half. A
Kaleigh McKye shot in the 51st minute forced a diving save from Pathak and the Rams continued to press. Twenty minutes later, McKye found herself with another chance to cash in but Marauders defender Cejada Cassato-Benjamin was there to make the clearance off the goal line.
In the 73rd minute, Sheehan-Alleyene came on as a substitute and scored seven minutes later to finally break open the scoreless game.
McMaster tried to rally following the goal and Rams keeper
Elisa Lapadula was forced into a save in the 88th minute but she was up to the task to keep the cleansheet in order.
The Rams finish the regular season with a 5-3-2 record for 17 points to sit tied for third in the OUA Central division. The Rams tied with McMaster, who they win a tiebreaker against based on their head-to-head results, giving the Rams the second wildcard berth into the postseason. The Rams will head to Ottawa to take on the top ranked Gee-Gees in quarter-final action on Wednesday, November 3.
