Rams blanked in Ottawa, knocked off by Gee-Gees in quarter-final

OTTAWA — After sneaking into the playoffs on the final day of the regular season, the Rams women's soccer team marched onto Ottawa's Matt Anthony Field on Wednesday feeling cautiously optimistic. Though they kept pace early with the tenacious Ottawa Gee-Gees—who owned the OUA's best regular season record—they were ultimately bested 2-0 and eliminated from postseason contention.

The Rams' discipline was tested early, as the team was forced to play a very conservative first half composed mainly of a measured defensive effort aimed at stymying a lethal Ottawa offence. After a nearly six-minute stoppage due to an injury suffered by Keira Kent, the Gee-Gees broke through in the 31st minute when an Angelina Gendreau shot bounced past Rams keeper Elisa Lapadula for the game's first goal.

Just seconds after Lapadula denied Gee-Gees forward Cassandra Provost on a streaking shot destined for the back of the net, Ottawa doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Provost got her revenge and beat Lapadula on her second attempt on the proceeding play. After 45 minutes of play, the Rams were down 2-0 and had but one shot on goal.

After the break, the Rams created some chances for themselves but were consistently denied by a tremendously organized Ottawa defence. Though the score remained 2-0 after 65 minutes, the Rams kept things from getting out of hand thanks to a key defensive play by Lizzie Farsang in the 61st minute.

In the 65th minute, Rams midfielder Savahnna Robinson was charged with her second yellow card, leaving the Rams down a player entering the final third of the match. Though she left the pitch in relatively good spirits, her ejection certainly didn't bode well for a squad that needed any help they could get in the second half.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Rams cobbled together their first real scoring chance in the 76th minute when Skylar Sheehan-Alleyene chipped a shot just wide of both Gee-Gees keeper Cassidy Joslin and the net's right post. Down to nine players in stoppage time and unable to mount a substantial comeback, the Rams went away quietly and suffered a crushing shutout loss to end their season.

The loss marks the eighth straight time the Rams have lost to the Gee-Gees and the second consecutive season in which the Rams have been knocked out by Ottawa in the OUA quarter-final.
