TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams earned a massive 3-0 win over the No. 8 Nipissing Lakers in their final home game of the regular season on Saturday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.
Ryerson's
Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.) led the way with her first-period marker in her last regular-season game in the blue and gold.
The Rams got off to an unstoppable start in the first period, netting two unanswered goals just seven minutes apart. Green would find the back of the net first, burying an
Erika Crouse (Kirkland Lake, Ont.) rebound to put the Rams up 1-0 just seven minutes into the period.
Madison Lalonde (Blenheim, Ont.) gave the Rams a two-goal lead at the 13:59 mark of the first, picking up an open puck and breaking into Nipissing's defensive zone. The low glove side shot left no chance for Lakers goaltender Danika Ranger.
A goalless second period was littered with penalties on both sides of the ice, and Rams goaltender
Rachel Seeley (Ottawa, Ont.) made several key saves to hinder the pressing Lakers. Ryerson outshot Nipissing 18-12 through 40 minutes and continued to carry their 2-0 lead into the third period.
Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) added an empty net goal in the dying minutes of the game to secure a 3-0 shutout win for the Rams. Seeley finished the game with 19 saves on 19 shots through 60 minutes of play.
The win over Nipissing sees the Rams jump into the seventh position in the standings with 36 points on the season, trailed by both the Guelph Gryphons and the Western Mustangs with 35 points apiece.
"It's hard not to look at the standings … but we're focused on getting points and we know that as long as we get those points, we're in control of our own destiny," says Rams head coach
Lisa Haley.
"Nipissing is a very talented team, and to get a win and a shutout against them felt really good for our group."
The win also marked the final regular season home game for six senior members of the team. As a part of the evening's Senior Night festivities, the Rams celebrated the careers of Green,
Karli Nummikoski (Thunder Bay, Ont.),
Laura Ball (Toronto) and
Emily Marshall (Oakville, Ont.), as well as former players and current staff members
Rachel Dowdall and
Sydney Authier.
Green, team captain for the last two seasons, remained confident in her team's abilities in the win and says she has her sights set on the next opponent.
"I just want to build on what's happened recently," says Green. "To try to build on what we've accomplished [this season]."
Ryerson returns to action next weekend to wrap up their regular season campaign, hitting the road to take on the Windsor Lancers and the Western Mustangs as they continue to battle for an OUA playoff position.
