TORONTO — With just four matches remaining in the regular season, the Rams will resume action this week in their final two-game weekend of the season with matchups against the Nipissing Lakers and the Trent Excalibur.
Ryerson's week off came after back-to-back wins on the road. Their most recent 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-21) win over the RMC Paladins on January 25th saw the team capture their fifth victory in as many games, improving to a 13-2 record with just three weeks remaining in the regular season.
As the regular season begins to wind down, the Rams are due to begin preparations for postseason competition. If the Toronto Varsity Blues maintain their 12-2 record and earn wins in their next five games, they will enter the playoffs as the first seed in the East; the Rams will then likely be slated as the second seed. In this case, Ryerson will face off against the third-place team (currently the Waterloo Warriors) in the OUA West in a home-court quarterfinal matchup.Â
The Rams are in a good position to round out the weekend with an additional pair of wins, currently leading the OUA in kills (735), assists (690), digs (957), digs per set (15.44), and points (979.0). The team is set to face off against the Nipissing Lakers on Friday at home before hitting the road to take on the Trent Excalibur on Saturday. Â
Ryerson will look to improve upon last November's 3-1 (26-28, 25-22, 25-12, 26-24) win against Nipissing as they look ahead to Friday night's matchup at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. The Lakers are 3-11 on the season and sit fifth in the OUA East, currently 10 points back of the fourth and final playoff position. The team has struggled on defence this season but consistently serves and blocks well, ranking second in the league in blocks per set (2.04) and sixth in service aces per set (2.42). Ryerson has never lost an OUA game to Nipissing, and this year's team will have an opportunity to keep the streak alive on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. on the Coca-Cola Court.Â
Saturday evening has the Rams traveling to Peterborough to take on the Excalibur for the second and last time this season. Trent ranks sixth in the division with a 1-13 record, one of three OUA teams with just one win on the year. They sit last in the league in kills per set (5.82), hitting percentage (.024), assists per set (5.38), service aces per set (1.31), digs per set (9.13), blocks per set (0.97) and points per set (8.1). The Rams have also never dropped a match to Trent in program history and will have an opportunity to wrap up their final two-game weekend of the season with two victories. First serve flies at 5:00 p.m. at the Trent Athletics Centre.Â
