Rams to host Critelli Cup championship after win over Gee-Gees in semis

OTTAWA – The No. 2 nationally ranked Ryerson Rams headed to Ottawa on Wednesday night to face the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the Critelli Cup semifinal and after a dominant first quarter, a shaky second quarter, and second half full of back and forth action, the Rams pulled away just enough to take home an 84-76 win and head to the championship game.

The Rams came out firing from the get-go. Bronwyn Williams (Toronto) won the tip and even though Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) missed her first three-point attempt, she collected the rebound and found Williams for an open layup. The Rams would continue to shoot the ball at high rate, shooting 77 percent from beyond the arc in the quarter. At the end of the first, Hayley Robertson (Toronto) would lead the team with 11 points, going three-for-three from the arc including two back-to-back buckets. The Rams would hold a 12-point lead going into the second.

While the first was all Rams, the second was all Gee-Gees. Ottawa shook off their stiffness from the first and completely shut down the Rams' offence with strong defence. They kept the Rams to just six points while scoring 19 for themselves. The Gee-Gees would trail by just one point partway through the quarter and would tie the game with three minutes left in the quarter. The Gee-Gees would eventually take a one-point lead with a buzzer-beating three from Savannah Provo. The Rams' shooting percentage would fall to below 50, a scary sign for the Rams who had two more quarters to get through.

Ryerson would go on a 5-0 run to start the third quarter, including three made free throws from Rachel Farwell (Rothesay, N.B.). Farwell would lead the team with 21 points, going 6-10 from beyond the arc. The Gee-Gees would come back though and reclaim a one-point lead at the five-minute mark. A lead hot potato would ensue before the Rams would finally pull away with a one-point lead at the buzzer.

The Rams would hold onto a lead throughout the fourth, giving it up only once partway through the quarter. They would they go on a 21-11 run to end the quarter and cement their win. The Rams had six out of seven players shoot from beyond the arc and would outscore the Gee-Gees 49-40 in the second half. The Rams showed their resiliency and determination, their grit and passion during this game, never giving up and coming back strong.

The Rams will head back home to host the Critelli Cup championship game against the Brock Badgers on Saturday, February 29 at 6:00 p.m. on Coca-Cola Court. Ticket information will be made available shortly.
