Rams complete sweep of Brock to advance to OUA semis

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams took to home ice to beat the Brock Badgers 3-2 on Saturday night, advancing to the OUA semifinal in just two games. Next week, Ryerson will match up with the top-seeded Toronto Varsity Blues to continue their quest to the McCaw Cup.

Picking up from Thursday's game, Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) netted the game-winner on the power play in the third. Meanwhile, Olivia Giardetti (Whitby, Ont.) opened the scoring and assisted on Gemmill's game-winner. Meanwhile, captain Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.) tied the game with her first of the postseason.

The teams looked equal for the opening half of the first until the Rams earned some momentum.

While they failed to convert on a mid-period power play, Giardetti took matters into her own hands 11 minutes in. After stripping Brock's Katreena Whiteye of the puck in the neutral zone, Giardetti deked past Paige Cohoon before scoring five-hole. Giardetti's highlight reel tally marked her second of the playoffs and two games in a row where she opened the scoring.

Rachel Seeley (Ottawa, Ont.) kept the lead intact on a late power play with a pad stop, sending the Rams into the intermission up 1-0.

By the midway point of the second, the Rams had already given up four power plays. While Brock's player-advantage was 0-for-4, momentum swung in the Badgers' favour. Brock forward Claudia Murphy netted two unanswered in the second to make it 2-1. Her first tally came six minutes in off a rebound, while she tipped in the go ahead goal four minutes later.

Once again, Seeley kept the Rams afloat with a pair of saves off a 2-on-1 with under five to go in the second.

Late in the period, the Rams got another power play opportunity. A feed across from Avery Horlock (Pickering, Ont.) reached Green, who flung it in from the faceoff circle. The captain's first of the playoffs came with just five seconds left in the player-advantage and in the last minute of play in the second to tie it up.

Just 30 seconds into the third on another power play, Gemmill gave the Rams the lead. Giardetti started the rush before Erika Crouse (Kirkland, Ont.) put it on net, with Gemmill burying the rebound while diving.

Seeley made seven more saves in the third, and the Rams killed off an astonishing four penalties in the final frame. After shutting Brock down defensively in the last minutes of play, the final whistle sounded and the Rams rushed the ice to celebrate.

"I think we were a much bigger team than they were," said Giardetti post-game. "I think we had a lot more strength and that helped us in a lot of the battles, especially on the PK (penalty kill)." Despite sacrificing 16 minutes in penalties, the Rams were a perfect 8-for-8 on the penalty kill tonight.

Head coach Lisa Haley commented on the Rams' dramatic sweep of Brock, including two separate one-goal victories. "We haven't always taken the easy road at times and so to be able to wrap this up in two games means a lot to our group."

With their sweep of the 4th-seeded Brock, the Rams have now won five games in a row dating back to the regular season. However, the squad is in for an even bigger challenge starting next week, taking on the top-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues.
