TORONTO — The No. 2 Ryerson Rams are set to wrap up their 2019-20 regular season campaign on Sunday afternoon against the Queen's Gaels at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.
The Rams are coming off a hard-fought 3-1 (26-24, 26-24, 16-25, 25-21) win over the York Lions last Saturday. The team's stars shone bright in the win as
Cailin Wark (Georgetown, Ont.),
Lauren Veltman (Brampton, Ont.) and
Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) combined for 43 kills through four sets.Â
Barring a loss by the Toronto Varsity Blues this weekend, the Rams will finish the year ranked second on the OUA East. The team will host the third-seeded team in the OUA West in their first playoff match of the postseason; but, with three teams in the West tied at 22 points apiece, the Rams' quarter-final opponent is still anyone's guess.Â
With playoffs looming in the near future, the Rams will look to capitalize on the weekend's opportunity to solidify their postseason game plan and make any last-minute adjustments ahead of their much-anticipated OUA quarter-final matchup the following Saturday.Â
Before shifting their sights to the playoffs, Ryerson will host Queen's on Sunday as they look to tally their 17th and final win of the 2019-20 regular season. The Rams earned a 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21) win over the Gaels when these two teams last met back on January 24; since then, Queen's has earned three wins including a notable 3-2 (25-18, 17-25, 28-26, 20-25, 15-11) victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on January 25. Win or lose this weekend, the Gaels will finish the season ranked third in the OUA East and will face off against the second-seeded team in the West in the first round of the playoffs.Â
Queen's Arielle Palermo leads the OUA in service aces per set (0.85) and totalled eight service aces when these two teams met earlier in the semester; as such, the Rams will need to improve their serve-receive this time around in anticipation of Palermo's dominance. The Rams will also have the opportunity to exploit Queen's weaknesses on defence by utilizing their variety of attacking options with the hopes of securing a win in their final contest of the regular season.Â
This weekend's match against Queen's also marks the team's Senior Day, as the Rams are set to celebrate the career of graduating senior
Brett Hagarty. First serve flies at 2:00 p.m. on the Coca-Cola Court in Toronto.Â
