TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams hosted the Laurentian Voyageurs to close out their regular season on senior night on Saturday, and the Rams took home another big win, 80-50, as the three graduating seniors
Bronwyn Williams (Toronto),
Emma Fraser (Toronto), and
Hayley Robertson (Toronto) were honoured.
"They're huge," said
Rachel Farwell (Rothesay, N.B.) about her senior teammates. "Just their attitude that they come in with everyday along with their skill, they have such a big impact on making our team better."
Coming off a win the previous night, the Rams started off a bit flat, missing their shots and giving the Voyageurs open looks. The teams would go back-and-forth on the score board, but the Rams would pull away with a three-point lead at the five-minute mark. It was only up from there for the Rams as they went on a 15-3 run to end the quarter. Farwell would score two three-pointers and lead the team with 13 points, one point more than the Voyageurs' score.Â
"We stayed with our plan," said head coach
Carly Clarke. "Record wise we're a better team than them but, that doesn't mean you're up 20 from the start, you got to go and earn that."
The Rams would expand on their lead in the second. Robertson got the Rams going with a three and had a nice cross court assist for a
Stefanija Mrvaljevic (Mississauga, Ont.) layup. The Rams would lead by 14 halfway through the quarter and would limit the Voyageurs to just four points in the final five minutes of the first half.
Robertson made an impact early on in the third as well, scoring two back-to-back layups. She would end with seven points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Also noteworthy was that the Voyageurs gave up seven of their 19 turnovers in the third. The Rams would be up by 21 at the halfway point of the frame but would have a scare as
Taite Cleland (Ancaster, Ont.) went down with an ankle injury. She headed to the locker room but would come back out and stay on the bench.Â
"I don't think anything is too serious," said Clarke. "That's something we've been dealing with all season, we're already a bit depleted so just next person up."Â
In the fourth,
Sarai Bailey (Toronto) would also limp off the court with an injury and would stay there. Despite the smaller lineup, the Rams would continue to dominate thanks in part to Farwell who finished with 36 points and nine rebounds. Farwell set a new career high in points and moved into a tie for the all-time record for points in a game - held by
Sofia Paska who was in attendance. The Rams would end the game with a 30-point win and huge smiles as they finished their regular season on a high note.Â
"It's pretty impressive," said Clarke. "She shot ready every time and she had a couple others that were really close.
"We find open shooters and they shoot shots and we're willing to share the ball and find the hot hand and we did that today."
The Rams head to the playoffs next. Because of their win tonight, they clinched first place in the OUA central division and will get a first-round playoff bye.Â
"It's going to give us more time to get better this week," said Farwell. "Come Saturday night we're here, ready to go, guns blazing and have a good game."
The Rams will head straight to the OUA quarter-final to be played on Saturday, February 22Â at 6:00 p.m. at home. Catch the game live on OUA.tv.Â
