KINGSTON — The Ryerson Rams bounced back after Friday's 3-0 loss to Queen's to tally a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-15) sweep of their own against the RMC Paladins on Saturday night at the SAM Gymnasium in Kingston.
Leading the way for Ryerson was sophomore outside hitter Xander Ketrzynski (Toronto, Ont.) with 12 kills and two blocks through three sets.
The Paladins put up their strongest fight in the first set, keeping the score close right up until set point. RMC put together a virtually errorless set of volleyball in the opening frame as well, tallying just one error and 13 kills and attacking at a game-high .444 percent. Nevertheless, it was the Rams who prevailed 25-23 to go up 1-0 in the match.
The Rams attempted to regain control in the second, but the pesky Paladins continued to capitalize on Ryerson's errors and again managed to keep the score close. The Rams capped off the set with a 25-22 victory — a one-point improvement from the first — and headed into the third seeking their second sweep in their last three games.
The Paladins' worn-down attack allowed the Rams to quickly seal the deal with a 25-15 third-set victory. Saturday's 3-0 win marked Ryerson's fifth sweep of the season, two of which have come on the road in 2020.
Third year outside hitter Taryq Sani (Scarborough, Ont.) totaled six kills and four digs in two sets, while rookie attacker Derek Webster (Ottawa, Ont.) led the team with two service aces. Setters Trent Ketrzynski (Toronto, Ont.) and Lhexen Rabbit (Hamilton, Ont.) shared second ball duties in the three-set win over RMC.
The Rams will enjoy an upcoming bye week before hosting the Nipissing Lakers on Friday, February 7 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.
