TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams overwhelmed the No. 5 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday, beating the fifth-in-the-country squad 91-67 to increase their win streak to six.
Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.) kept up his fine form, finishing with 33 points, five assists and two steals.
Tanor Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) picked up 24 points of his own along with a whopping 19 rebounds for a clear double-double.
Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) also scored 23 points while leading the way with four three-pointers.
In front of a packed Coca-Cola Court crowd, the first quarter went by in an energetic blur. Kokko put on a clinic, scoring 14 points in the opening ten minutes. The guard's performance helped keep Ryerson close as they trailed 26-23 after the first.
Ngom showed off his versatility throughout the rest of the half. The forward scored two threes while throwing down a pair of monster dunks, including an alley-oop finish off a Kokko lob. Ngom caught up to Kokko before the half, securing his double-double early with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
After Ngom's second slam, Frederick layed in a soft bucket to give the Rams a 32-30 lead. Ryerson held on to finish the half in front, securing a seven point 39-32 cushion.
In the third, the Rams' lead only increased, reaching double digits around mid-quarter. Kokko was at it again, draining a three and earning himself a reverse layup and-one as he brought his point total up to 23. Ryerson maintained an astonishing 66-47 lead after the third while holding the Gee-Gees offence to just 21 points in the second and third quarters.
Both sides of the Rams' court flexed their muscles in the fourth, extending their lead to 33 at one point. Despite 44 attempts from beyond the arc, the Gee-Gees' were held to just nine three-pointers. Meanwhile, the Rams secured ten threes on just 21 attempts. For the rest of the final quarter, Ryerson had no trouble cruising to their 91-67 victory in front of the Ryerson fans.
"Being aggressive to start the game opens things up for everyone else," said Kokko post-game. "We know (Ottawa) like to get up a lot of shots, especially from beyond the arc, so we just tried to key in on that and I think we did a good job executing."
Head coach
Borko Popic continued to praise the Rams' defensive play. "We did a good job contesting. There wasn't a lot of uncontested threes for (Ottawa) which is, for a team who shoots it that well, important."
The Rams are in for an even bigger challenge against the undefeated No. 1 ranked Carleton Ravens Saturday night on home court. They look to extend their win streak against the best team in the country with tip-off at 8:00 p.m.
