King's breakout game leads Rams in dominant win over Badgers

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team took care of business on the road as they defeated the Brock Badgers in straight sets on Sunday afternoon (25-21, 25-18, 25-18).

The Rams outclassed their opponents, with the Badgers having no answer for Ryerson's power on offence. Xander Ketrzynski (Toronto) led the Rams with 11 kills on just 22 attempts and two errors.

The first set was surely the most competitive of the three, with the Badgers showing impressive play early in the match with consecutive kills by outside hitter Logan House. It did not take long for the Rams to take control, however, going up 10-5 and keeping a comfortable lead for the rest of the set. Ketrzynski asserted himself against the Badgers and proved to be devasting for them in the first.

The Rams had another slow start in the second, going down 9-7 to the Badgers thanks to a series of errors, but once again Brock could not keep up with Ryerson's offensive weapons.

Freshman Alex King (Ottawa, Ont.) came out of his shell in the second set and for the rest of the match, finishing with seven kills on just 10 attempts in his second-ever OUA game. Thanks to King's career-high and other strong plays from Greg Vukets (Auckland, New Zealand), the Rams quickly took the second set 25-18.

The third set left no doubts for Ryerson, as they led the entire set to take it 25-18 once again. This set was the most one-sided of the match, with Taryq Sani (Scarborough, Ont.) looking very confident on the attack and Trent Ketrzynski (Toronto) coming in and setting well towards the end of the set.

The Rams snap their two-game losing streak and take their fourth straight-set win of the season to give themselves a 7-5 record.

The Rams will be headed to Kingston next weekend to take on RMC on Sunday, but first, the No. 8 Queen's Gaels on Friday night. The Gaels are the team directly above the Rams in the OUA East standings, sitting with an 8-3 record and coming off six straight wins including a 3-0 sweep of the No. 10 Windsor Lancers.

With a relatively lighter schedule remaining this season, Friday night's matchup at the Athletics and Recreation Centre will be one of the Rams' most important of the regular season. Catch both games on OUA.tv. next weekend.
