TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams made few mistakes on Saturday night, picking up a 5-2 win over their divisional opponent Windsor Lancers.
Outshooting Windsor 36-23, the squad had some newer faces find the scoreboard.
Brandon Glover (London, Ont.) netted the game-winner off a rebound from
Zachary Shankar (Prescott, Ont.), who had two assists on the night.
Patrick Fellows (Mississauga, Ont.) was also a pivotal player, opening the scoring as well as adding an assist.Â
The teams played evenly early on, with both goalies looking sharp. Some physicality resulted in a mid-period scrum, setting the aggressive tone for the rest of the game.Â
Later in the frame, a double minor was assessed to Windsor's Trent Fox for spearing
Adam Craievich (Sarnia, Ont.). Two minutes into their man-advantage, two clean passes from both Zach Shankar and
Aaron Hyman (Calgary, Alta.) led to
Patrick Fellows'Â tape. The forward buried it past Windsor's Jonathan Reinhart, leaving the Rams with a 1-0 lead after 20.Â
In the second,
Jesse Barwell (Oakville, Ont.) led a quick rush with
Mathew Santos (Toronto). Santos made a great pass to Barwell on the right wing, who backhanded it into the top shelf past Reinhart to pad the Rams' lead early in the frame.Â
Windsor's Ian Parker put the Lancers on the board just about a minute later off a play from behind the net. However, Shankar and Glover answered right back as Glover capped off a diving shot attempt by Shankar, firing in a rebound by the crease.  Â
Garrett Forrest (Ashburn, Va.) kept the Rams up 3-1 entering the third with a big save on a partial breakaway late in the frame.
Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont.) quickly made things 4-1 in the third off of a seemingly unstoppable rush with Fellows. The forward made a nifty backhand-forehand move in the slot before sending it over Reinhart's shoulder.Â
As the clock wound down, some tensions flared. A total of six roughing calls, two cross-checking calls, and a slashing call were all given out in the last five minutes of the game. Windsor finished the game with 30 penalty minutes, while Ryerson had 12 minutes in the box of their own.Â
In the midst of the penalty madness, Ian Parker scored his second of the game, but Barwell picked up an empty-netter, sealing the game at 5-2.Â
"It was arguably one of our best 60 minutes of the year" said head coach
Johnny Duco post-game. The Rams kept composed against the physical Lancers squad, allowing only one Windsor power play. Meanwhile, the Rams picked up two markers with man-advantages of their own.Â
"Any time you score a power play goal, usually it gains some momentum. There's ebbs and flows in a game, and the momentum can definitely shift because of the special teams."
The Rams are back in action on Mattamy Home Ice on Thursday night against the Waterloo Warriors, with puck drop at 7:15 p.m.Â
