TORONTO - An aggressive Ryerson Rams squad swept the Western Mustangs 3-0 on Friday night, winning each set 25-15, 28-26, and 25-19.
Xander Ketryznski (Toronto) and
Taryq Sani (Scarborough, Ont.) both reached double digits in kill totals. Ketryznski led the way with 13 while Sani secured 11.Â
The Rams were on cruise control in the first set, securing a 25-15 win.
Taryq Sani made a sprawling save which Ketryznski rewarded with a powerful kill. Sani went on to have six digs on the night.Â
Western pushed back hard in the second set.
Navreet Suhan (Mississauga, Ont.) stood tall with a perfectly timed kill, and the Rams looked sharp. The Mustangs seemed to match every Ryerson move, and the score read 16-13 at the technical. This continued later on with both squads on the edge of taking the set. It was ultimately a block assist followed by a hard hit by Greg Vukets (Auckland, NZ) which deflected out of Western's bounds, winning the set 28-26.Â
In the third, Sani had some fun with one of his kills, finessing a perfect lob over two Mustangs.
Riley Anderson (Cambridge, Ont.) also picked up some kills, and the middle blocker went 4-for-4 on total attacks. Western managed to keep up with Ryerson at times but failed to overcome the Rams' dominant play. The sweep was complete with the third set taken 25-19.
"It was a nice win tonight. We were really in control of our serve reception which allowed us to establish our middle attack," said head coach Matt Harris. "We missed a couple too many serves than I'd like, but that's okay (because) we were aggressive.
"It was a nice way to start out our second semester, a nice home win for the guys."Â
The Rams are back in action on home court Saturday night against the No. 10 ranked Windsor Lancers, with first serve flying at 8:00 p.m. on Coca-Cola Court.Â
