No. 5 Rams hold off Gaels to secure third win

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men's soccer team took their home opener against the Queen's Gaels 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Downsview Park.

Midfielder Muaz Saleh (Hamilton, Ont.) cashed in his third goal of the season to give the Rams the edge. Keeper Ali Ghazanfari (Stouffville, Ont.) secured his second clean sheet of the season after a great effort in net.

The Rams entered to the pitch on a hot streak after two big wins last weekend. Their momentum was clear in the first half on Saturday. Fancy footwork led to plenty of chances early on, and a huge diving stop from Ghazanfari in the 44th minute kept things scoreless at the half.

Saleh got Ryerson on the board early in the second half after a well-placed strike to the bottom left corner in the 51st minute. Action went back and forth for the remainder of the game until the Rams ultimately pulled away 1-0.

Despite their victory, Rams head coach Filip Prostran said play was "sloppy" and performance "was not great". Some yellow cards and giveaways plagued Ryerson's squad. Saleh said, "I got to the ball first" when referring to his questionable yellow card which will prevent him from playing on Sunday.

In regards to the Rams' next game, coach Prostran said he has to change the gameplan, but will rely on depth. "We've got a really deep squad, we've got 28 players and 28 can play" said the coach.

The Rams take on the RMC Paladins on Sunday, Sept. 8th at 3:15 p.m. on home turf.
