TORONTO - Both pitching staffs had their hands full in game one on Saturday, in a high-scoring affair where Toronto bested Ryerson, 9-6.
The Rams got things moving in the first inning. They scored one run thanks to hot hitting
Anthony Fera's single.
Toronto evened things up at one in the top of the second inning when Kristyan Puyal-Gnossar hit a solo homer. However, the Varsity Blues broke open the deadlock with a big six run fourth inning.
Ryerson attempted to mount a comeback scoring three runs in the eighth inning but fell short losing to Toronto, 9-6.
Kevin Lucas took the loss for the Rams. He surrendered seven runs on eight hits over three and a third innings, while striking out three.
Coming into Saturday's games, Rams head coach
Ben Rich said one of the few keys to competing with a team like this was to: "get engaged on the bench, and if we go down a run, to not let that deflate us." The Rams did just that nearly mounting a comeback late in game one.
Game 2Â
Saturday's second game against Toronto was a heartbreaker for Ryerson, as they lost the lead late in a 6-5 defeat. The game was tied at five with Toronto batting in the top of the seventh when the Varsity Blues got a two-out single to score the winning run.
The Rams took a commanding 5-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth. Starting pitcher
Jeremias Sucre dominated Toronto over the first four innings, striking out seven and scattering three hits. But a Joe Wood bases clearing triple fueled the Varsity Blues comeback to tie the score in the inning and helped to set the stage for the eventual game-winning hit in the seventh.
"The good thing about baseball is that you play it all the time and tomorrow is a new day so we're looking to go out and compete against a good team in Queen's," said coach Rich when asked about his final thoughts on the tough day at the ballpark.
