Varsity Blues put an end to Rams’ winning streak

The Ryerson Rams’ three-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon as they suffered a 1-0 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Varsity Centre in Toronto.

TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams' three-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon as they suffered a 1-0 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Varsity Centre in Toronto.

The Varsity Blues would open up the scoring early in the first half, capitalizing on a deep indirect free kick opportunity. Rams goalkeeper Elisa Lapadula (Brampton, Ont.) made back-to-back saves as Toronto's forwards closed in on the net, and Valentina Greco (Richmond Hill, Ont.) would knock in the second of two rebounds to give the Varsity Blues a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

The teams continued to exchange opportunities through the remainder of the half, but neither team could find the back of the net as Toronto carried their 1-0 lead through the half.

Ryerson struggled to connect on long balls in the opening 45 minutes of the match as Toronto's tireless defenders attacked any and all play on their half of the field.

Toronto continued to control the ball in their box in the second half, but the Rams found themselves getting closer and closer to the net.

Despite Ryerson's consistent offensive push and a strong performance by Lapadula, the Rams couldn't find an equalizer in the second half. The Rams suffered a 1-0 loss to the Varsity Blues, their first loss in four games.

Lapadula made three saves in the game.

The Rams will return to Downsview Park next Saturday to host Toronto in the second game of their home-and-home series. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
