WATERLOO — The No. 2 Ryerson Rams pulled out a win in the fifth set for the second night in a row, this time taking a 3-2 (23-25, 25-12, 25-23, 23-25, 16-14) victory over the No. 5 Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night at Physical Activities Complex in Waterloo.
Rams rookie
Jasmine Rivest (Montreal, Que.) finished the game with a jaw-dropping 20 kills, one service ace and one solo block. Perhaps more impressively, she finished with a hitting percentage of .606 after not committing an error.
The Rams played an attack-heavy game against Waterloo, minimizing their errors and hitting at a season-high .343 percent through five sets. The Warriors were strong on the block through the duration of the match, pushing the Rams to the brink in four of the evening's five sets.
The Warriors pulled out a 25-23 win in the first set to take an early 1-0 lead in the match despite Ryerson's game-high 18 kills. The Rams came back and dominated the second, forcing seven Waterloo errors on eight kills and 22 attempts. A 25-12 win in the second appeared to leave the Rams in an ideal position to emerge with a win in four sets, but the fifth-ranked Warriors weren't going down without a fight.
Back-and-forth action defined the following two sets, with the Rams and the Warriors exchanging 25-23 wins in the third and the fourth.
The fifth followed a similar formula; Ryerson opened the set with a 5-1 lead, but Waterloo came back to pull ahead 6-5 just moments later. Neither team could pull ahead with a lead as the teams approached the 15-point mark, but the Rams would edge ahead by one after a targeted kill by the rookie Rivest.
Lindsay Kleuskens (London, Ont.) and
Cailin Wark (Georgetown, Ont.) would team up for a massive game-winning block at match point to give the Rams a 16-14 win in the fifth set and a 3-2 victory in the match.
Senior outside hitter
Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) led the Rams with four service aces and 13 digs on the evening, while team captain Wark finished the match with 16 kills. Second-year middle
Katelyn Grasman (Komoka, Ont.) tallied four total blocks on the game.
Wark, the fourth-year outside hitter, tallied her 500th career kill in the match against Waterloo, becoming just the sixth player in program history to eclipse the 500 kill milestone.
The Rams are set to return home this week and begin preparations for Friday night's match against the RMC Paladins. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto on November 15th.
