Rams earn special win to end 2019

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams visited Waterloo on Saturday afternoon to face the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks for their final game of 2019. After a shaky first half, the Rams picked up the pace and dominated the second to come away with a 65-46 win.

This is a special win for the Rams' coaching staff as head coach Carly Clarke hits her 100 career wins milestone.

This was a low-scoring game in the first quarter. Both teams were scoreless two and a half minutes into the game, but the Rams would put up the first points as Hayley Robertson (Toronto) would force a turnover and get it to Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) for the uncontested layup. The score would be 4-2 after five minutes, but the offence would pick up. A couple of threes by Rachel Farwell, Taite Cleland, and Scotten would give the Rams a bigger 14-9 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Rams would start the scoring in the second half with a quick jumper. However, the Golden Hawks would pick up the pace in the second with 18 points compared to the Rams' 13. By the five-minute mark the Rams would hold only a two-point lead that would be snuffed out by the Golden Hawks around seven minutes in. The lead would sway back and forth for the last couple of minutes, but a couple of free throws by the Golden Hawks would tie the game 27-27 at the half.

The Golden Hawks would take the lead in the third as they opened the scoring with a layup from Kate Moran. The lead would again flicker back and forth as Robertson would get a three for the Rams, but the Golden Hawks would answer with their own from Brianna Iannazzo. Another Golden Hawks three from Moran and some Rams turnovers would give the Golden Hawks a two-point lead with five minutes left in the quarter. That would quickly change though as the Rams picked up the slack defensively. The Rams would take a seven-point lead into the fourth.

Jama Bin-Edward (Waterloo, Ont.) would open the scoring for the Rams in the fourth and would head back to the line in the next possession to shoot free throws. She would end the game with eight points, but had a strong defensive presence getting five rebounds and three blocks. The Rams came alive in the fourth, limiting the Golden Hawks to just seven points – the first of which were scored four minutes in – while scoring 19 for themselves. The Rams would win their fourth straight game 65-46.

Scotten, Bronwyn Williams, and Robertson would all get more than 10 points, with Williams almost hitting a double-double with nine rebounds as well. Iannazzo led the Golden Hawks with 15 points and three rebounds.

The Rams will enjoy some time off for the winter before heading to Hamilton on Wednesday, January 8th against the McMaster Marauders at 6:00 pm.
