WATERLOO, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams faced off against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on the road Saturday afternoon. The Rams would end a two-game losing streak with an impressive 77-62 win against the Golden Hawks.
The great thing about having 7-2
Tanor Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) is that the Rams are most likely to always win first possession, and that's what happened this afternoon. However, it would take the Rams a couple possessions to get on the board first with a
Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) layup. The Golden Hawks would take the lead after back-to-back plays, but the lead would go back and forth until they were tied at the five-minute mark. The Rams would capitalize on a low scoring Golden Hawks offence as they go on a 6-0 run to end the quarter with a six-point lead.
The Golden Hawks would strike first in the second as they headed to the free throw line, sinking both shots. Despite a closer quarter in terms of scoring, the Rams would still maintain their lead throughout the second. Former Golden Hawk
Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.) made some great plays for the Rams including a tough shot against two defenders. Another factor that helped the Rams was the Golden Hawks' inability to defend Ngom as he headed to the free throw line on multiple occasions. The score would be 37-28 heading to the half.
Frederick would the lead the way in the third once again with a layup and would head to the free throw line on the next possession. The Rams had better success with their free throws making 77 per cent of their shots while the Golden Hawks only made 53 per cent of theirs. The Rams would be up by 15 at the five-minute mark and would continue a dominating performance for the third. Outscoring the Golden Hawks by eight, the Rams would lead 59-42 heading to the fourth.
Continuing their dominating lead into the fourth, Ngom would get the first couple of points including a dunk from a nice pass by Kokko. The Rams were looking unstoppable five minutes into the quarter as they led 67-51. However, the Golden Hawks remained aggressive, never letting the ball go easily. With Ngom fouling out, the Hawks were able to make better shots and closed the gap a bit, but it was a little too late as a stifling Rams defence would help them secure a 77-62 win.
Ngom would get a career-high in points this afternoon with 21, almost hitting a double-double as he had nine rebounds as well. Frederick would get a double-double though, with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Kokko would lead the Rams in scoring with 22 points against his former team. Both Romello Taylor and Jackson Mayers would lead the Golden Hawks with 13 points and Kemel Archer would get a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
This was the final game of 2019 for the Rams as they take a break for the winter but will be back in action on Wednesday, January 8th, against the McMaster Marauders at 8:00 p.m.
