Rookies shine as Rams sweep Excalibur

The Ryerson men's volleyball team took care of business on Saturday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre as they defeated the Trent Excalibur in straight sets.

The Rams led for the majority of the opening set but caught an early scare in the match when they were tied at 23-23 against the Excalibur. When it mattered most, the Rams finished the set strong with a pair of attacks from Tariq Sani (Scarborough, Ont) to win it 25-23.

In the second, the Rams did not make the same mistake twice and left no room for doubt. They led 16-8 at the technical timeout and finished the set winning 25-17.

The third set was a similar story for the Rams, leading 16-10 at the technical and wrapping up the match with another 25-17 set win.

Sani and Xander Ketrzynski (Toronto) proved to be a 1-2 punch for the Rams all night, tallying a combined 21 out of the teams 37 total kills.

Rams rookies Trent Ketrzynski (Toronto) and Derek Webster (Ottawa, Ont) both featured for the majority of the match and held their own against the Excalibur.

With Webster collecting four kills and four digs, Rams head coach Matt Harris had this to say about the Ottawa native, "Derek had to play some key moments early in the year when Taryq (Sani) went down, and he played really well, which gave him a lot of confidence. Tonight he played really well, he served well, and I was really happy with him".

Webster's fellow rookie Trent Ketrzynksi was happy to hear that he tallied 16 assists in the match, and went on to express "It was great to get the nerves off ... it was good to get out there and get comfortable".

Coach Harris also spoke highly of Ketrzynksi's play, saying, "Trent's our hardest worker off the court and it shows with how he played tonight. He was well prepared tonight. He set a perfect match; he served and blocked well. He ran the court on offense and I expected Trent to play like that".

This was the last game of the calendar year for the Rams, and they will be back playing the Western Mustangs January 10th on home court.
