Rams pick up crucial divisional win over Brock at home

TORONTO - Head Coach Johnny Duco cracked a smile post-game after the Rams beat the Brock Badgers 2-1 on Saturday night. Since defeating Guelph on Thursday, Saturday's victory marked two crucial divisional wins for the Rams in the OUA West.

Mathew Santos (Toronto) opened the scoring and Hayden McCool (Whitby, Ont) slotted the game-winner. Garrett Forrest (Ashburn, Va) had a bounce back performance, making 21 saves in the win as Ryerson outshot Brock 31-22.

Brock got the better of Ryerson early on after puck drop, but the Rams held them off. Two Badgers power-plays came and went thanks to Ryerson's second ranked in the OUA penalty kill unit.

Things quieted down later in the period as Forrest made some stellar stops and Captain Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont) rang one off the post.

In the second, Brock sustained some early pressure on a residual power-play, but things were settled down once again.

On Ryerson's turn on the man-advantage, clogged shooting lanes and a big glove save from Brock's Mario Cavaliere on Santos kept things scoreless.

Finally, a flurry of goals halfway into the second left Ryerson with a 2-1 lead. All three markers came within three minutes of one another.

The offense started with Santos' forecheck effort allowing him some space in front to chip it by the Brock netminder.

Adam Berg tied things up a minute later, but Hayden McCool's tally brought the Rams' lead right back. Despite doubling Brock's shots with 24, Ryerson's pair of goals in those three minutes remained and the second ended 2-1.

Despite a pair of power-plays in the third, the Rams failed to find a dagger. Similar to their outing Thursday, Ryerson provoked the Badgers into giving up 30 penalty minutes. As Brock scrambled for some pressure, the game was sealed 2-1.

"That's two games in a row where we've gone into the third period against two really good teams up by a goal and were able to lock it down" said Duco.

Brock heads back to Mattamy Home Ice on Thursday, November 28th at 7:15 p.m. All Ryerson students can attend for free with their OneCard.
