Sani leads Rams to victory in first OUA game

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team defeated the RMC Paladins on Friday night in straight sets to bump themselves to a 4-2 record.

Rams outside hitter Taryq Sani (Scarborough, Ont.) led the Rams with 12 kills on 18 attempts in his first OUA game after missing the first four games of the season with an ankle injury.

The Rams came out strong in the first set, winning the first six points and leading 16-7 at the halfway mark. "How I expected this match to go was to play hard right from the start, it's always an honor to play against RMC and I'm happy our guys played hard right from the first whistle," said Rams head coach Matt Harris on the Rams strong start. The Rams went on to take the first 25-18 after RMC finished the set strong.

The second set was even stronger from the Rams, with the new starter (Sani) bringing a boost of confidence and maturity to the rest of the team. Rams middle blocker Sean Shultis (Springfield, Va.) recorded a pair of kills in the second and played in all three sets against RMC after only appearing in one set this season. First-year Trent Ketrzynski (Toronto) also appeared in the second and third set and recorded seven assists.

The Rams finished the match with another strong set taking the third 25-14. Xander Ketrzynski (Toronto) imposed his game in the third with five of his six aces of the match coming in this set. Ketrzynski finished the game with a season-low of nine kills. Sani's offence most definitely gave the OUA's leader in kills some relief this match.

When asked about his Rams debut, Sani expressed, "It feels great. I've been out for seven weeks, I'm in a new league and a new look, I'm just trying to do my best out here."

"It was great to get Taryq back on the court...He has worked really hard to get back and he had a great first match. It was nice to see him out there wearing the blue, white and gold," said Harris.

The Rams will be back on the court next Friday against the No. 9 ranked Varsity Blues at the Goldring Centre.
