ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams men's basketball team got off to a slow start on Saturday night and despite tying the game late, could not complete the comeback and fell 65-62 to the Brock Badgers.
Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) continued his hot start to the season, netting a team-high 25Â points after opening the year with 32 on Thursday night.
After committing six turnovers in the first quarter, Ryerson's offence couldn't get into a rhythm and trailed 24-16 after the opening ten minutes.
Despite tightening things up defensively in the second, allowing just 15 points for Brock, the offence continued to sputter and could muster just 13 points of their own to trail by ten, 39-29, at the half.
The Rams came alive in the third quarter, chipping away at the deficit until they finally pulled even.
Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.) scored 10 points in the frame after being shutout in the first half, helping to add balance to the Ryerson attack as Frederick continued to shine. Ryerson and Brock headed to the final ten minutes knotted at 53-53.
The final quarter was a struggle offensively for both teams, as neither looked eager to take a chance and leave themselves vulnerable at the defensive end. The teams combined for just 21 points between them in the final 10 minutes, but it was Brock who finally found some clutch shooting down the stretch.Â
Brock guard Tyler Brown hit a dagger of a three point shot to put the Badgers up for good and solidified a 65-62 win for his home side.
Ryerson drops to 1-1 on the season and will return to action on Friday, November 1 when they host the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the first of a two-game set at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
