Rams power through Ridgebacks in season opener

OSHAWA, Ont. —  The Ryerson Rams opened their 2019-20 campaign with a 4-2 win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre in Oshawa.

Three Rams players recorded two or more points in the victory.

Ryerson opened the first period with a quick goal from Avery Horlock (Pickering, Ont.) at the eight-minute mark of the game. A Lauren Nicholson (Dresden, Ont.) slapshot from the point was kicked aside by the Ridgebacks goaltender, but the rebound landed right on the stick of Rams forward Erika Crouse (Kirkland Lake, Ont.). Crouse made a quick cross-crease pass to Horlock who then netted the Rams' first goal of the year, giving her team a 1-0 lead early on in the game.

Five minutes later, Teagan Gartley's (Kitchener, Ont.) point shot was tipped in by Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) who increased the Rams' lead to two midway through the first period.

The Ridgebacks would grab one back at the start of the second period, but it was the Rams would continue to dominate their opponents on all ends of the ice.  Mariah Hinds (Toronto) scored her first goal of the year on a strong shot from the blue line midway through the second period, giving the Rams a 3-1 lead.

Nicholson netted her team's fourth goal of the game just four minutes later, firing a point-blank shot off a perfect setup by Rams captain Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.). The Ridgebacks would add another goal in the dying seconds of the period to cut the Rams' lead to two, but Ryerson continued to hold their lead through the remainder of the game.

A scoreless third period came and went, and the Rams walked off the ice with a 4-2 win in their season-opening game against Ontario Tech after outshooting their opponents 30-14 through 60 minutes.

Crouse and Ye Eun Park (Gangneung, Korea) each recorded two assists in the win while Nicholson finished the game with a goal and a helper.

The Rams will be back in action Saturday evening against the Queen's Gaels. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. in Kingston.
