Rams make light work of Lakers

TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams had no problem neutralizing the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, cruising their way to an 85-48 victory in their final home game of the month.

Ryerson's Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) led the way with 16 points and six rebounds in the win.

The first and second quarters followed a similar formula: the Rams would outscore the Lakers by 10 to 11 points, sinking around 40% of their field goals and fighting hard to lengthen the lead.

The Rams headed into halftime up 43-20 over the visitors. The Rams would continue to excel from beyond the arc in the second quarter, eventually finishing the half shooting 46% (5-11) from three.

Nipissing's production in the third quarter surpassed all of their previous quarters, but the Lakers still found themselves unable to one-up the dominant Rams.

Ryerson would outscore Nipissing 16-14 in the third quarter, heading into the final 10 minutes of the game with a 25-point lead over the Lakers.

The Rams would return to familiar form in the final quarter, outscoring Nipissing 26-14 and eventually taking an 85-48 win at home.

Ryerson's elite production flourished yet again from the floor tonight as the team went on to shoot 45% (31-69) through 40 minutes on the court.

“We've been talking a lot about shooting open shots and capitalizing on that as much as we can,” explains Rams head coach Carly Clarke, “and I thought our team did a great job of leading each other in that sense and making key improvements this weekend.”

Ryerson second year guard Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) had a strong game for her team, tallying 12 points and six rebounds in the win.

“We were getting all the shots we wanted tonight and moving the ball really well,” says Scotten. “Our defensive pressure was great too, and we're really happy with the win.”

The Rams will now hit the road for a five-game road trip, starting with a game at the Ottawa Gee-Gees on January 25 at 6:00 p.m.
